Configuring Dow Jones Risk and Compliance

Dow Jones Risk and Compliance is a data provider you can use to run these checks:

  • PEPs and sanctions screening for individuals

  • Sanctions and adverse media screening for companies

PEPs and sanctions screening for individuals

How it works

This is the default behavior when Passfort is integrated with Dow Jones Risk and Compliance Feed.

The check is performed by screening an individual’s name and, when available, date of birth and nationality through Dow Jones Risk and Compliance's Watchlist Standard CSV and XML Feed Services to provide a list of the individual’s potential matches to sanctions and politically exposed persons (PEPs).

If no potential matches are found for the individual, and the individual doesn't have potential matches returned from earlier screening checks, the check is marked Completed.

If any potential matches are found, the check returns Unresolved events and the matches are displayed in the check results. By default, all matches are displayed in the Potential matches list.

For every match that’s discovered, a detailed portfolio is displayed. This portfolio provides all available information from Dow Jones Risk and Compliance about the match’s biography, associates, political exposure, events, and sources.

This check variant is supported for all countries.

To reduce false positives, provide the individual’s date of birth and nationality where possible. A maximum of 200 potential matches can be processed. If there are more than 200 potential matches, they will not be displayed in Passfort. Refine your search or view the matches through your data provider's portal.

Configuration options

You have the following configuration options:

  • Include adverse media matches: When this option is selected, Passfort displays some instances of adverse media. Only adverse media from the following Dow Jones Risk and Compliance categories are returned for individuals: Terror, Organized Crime, Financial Crime, Trafficking, Corruption, War Crimes, Organized Crime Japan, Tax Crime.

  • Include individuals with Additional Domestic Screening Requirements: When this option is selected, the individual is screened through additional lists that countries can provide to recommend you perform enhanced due diligence on individuals. ADSR is displayed next to the match names in the check results.

  • Include matches on Other Official Lists: When this option is selected, the individual is screened through Dow Jones Risk and Compliance's Other Official Sanctions Lists. OOL is displayed next to the match names in the check results. To learn which issuers are included on the Other Official Sanctions Lists which are typically issued by regulatory agencies or agencies with a broad policy remit, like Interpol and Crimestoppers, contact your Dow Jones account manager.

  • Include matches on Other Exclusion Lists: When this option is selected, the individual is screened through Dow Jones Risk and Compliance's Other Exclusion Lists. OEL is displayed next to the match names in the check results. To learn which issuers are included on the Other Exclusion Lists, which are often agencies without regulatory authority, contact your Dow Jones account manager.

  • Ignore historical matches: When this option is selected, Passfort removes any matches that Dow Jones Risk and Compliance previously listed as politically exposed or sanctioned but are not on any current lists.

  • Ignore matches where the person is marked deceased: When this option is selected, matches are not returned for individuals marked as deceased by Dow Jones.

  • Enable ongoing monitoring: When this option is selected, any time a new match is discovered by Dow Jones Risk and Compliance, the check’s task is marked incomplete, and, if the profile’s application is approved, it’s put into review. When this option is deselected, new matches are only returned from Dow Jones Risk and Compliance when a user runs the check manually or, if your policy specifies, when a new task version is added to the application. Learn more about monitored applications.

When ongoing monitoring is enabled, any new matches are updated and displayed in Passfort once a week. Note that if it's not possible to get the latest information from Dow Jones Risk and Compliance, Passfort will retry the following week.

  • Include relatives and close associates in match results: When this option is selected, any close associates, like business partners or close relatives, who are on a PEPs or sanctions list are returned as potential matches. RCA is displayed next to the match names in the check results.

  • Perform additional name splitting when searching for matches (spaces and hyphens): When this option is selected, spaces and hyphens are treated the same when looking for matches. This allows more matches to be returned for Chinese and other regional names, where spaces and hyphens are used interchangeably. Note that this option can cause surnames to be split by hyphens and spaces.

  • Consider sanction matches only if they are from the following watchlists: When this option is selected, the individual is only searched in the groups of Dow Jones Risk and Compliance sanctions watchlists that you select.

To make the lists easier to select, we've grouped watchlists by issuer, such as the UN, and, where relevant, a category that the issuer has defined, such as Taliban & Al-Qaida Consolidated List. This means if the issuer provides a new version of the list, it will be added to the group automatically and you don't need to worry about updating your selection.

Any new groups, in other words, new issuers or categories, that Dow Jones adds will be deselected automatically. To add a group, contact us.

To see which groups are available, go to the Policy Builder > Data providers and select Dow Jones Risk and Compliance Feed from Individual data providers.

  • Select country types checked against the profile's nationality: When this option is deselected, if the individual's country of nationality is in their profile, it's checked against the Citizenship country category from Dow Jones Risk and Compliance. When this option is selected, if the individual's country of nationality is in their profile, it's checked against all of the country categories you select: Citizenship; Country of Registration; Country of Affiliation; Resident of; Jurisdiction; Country of Reported Allegation. Note that the country of nationality only needs to be the same as one country category for the match to be returned. To learn more about country categories, contact your Dow Jones Risk and Compliance account manager.

  • Name settings for false positive reduction: This required option is one of three that contributes to Passfort’s false positive reduction service. It determines how Passfort treats results returned from Dow Jones Risk and Compliance when a result’s name does not match the name on the profile. The value for the option must be one of the following: Allow any matches, Allow close or exact matches, or Allow exact matches.

  • Date of birth settings for false positive reduction: This required option is one of three contributing to Passfort’s false positive reduction service. It determines how Passfort treats results returned from Dow Jones Risk and Compliance when a result’s date of birth does not match the profile’s date of birth. The value for the option must be one of the following: Allow any matches, Allow close or exact matches, or Allow exact matches.

If the profile doesn’t have a date of birth, for example, if the field was left blank, date of birth is not used as a factor in identifying false positives.

  • Country settings for false positive reduction: This required option is one of three contributing to Passfort’s false positive reduction service. It determines how Passfort treats results returned from Dow Jones Risk and Compliance when a result’s country of nationality does not match the profile’s country of nationality. The value for the option must be one of the following: Allow any matches, Allow close or exact matches, or Allow exact matches.

If the profile doesn’t have a country of nationality, for example, the field was left blank, country of nationality is not used as a factor in identifying false positives.

To turn off Passfort’s false positive reduction service, set the Name settings for false positive reduction, Date of birth settings for false positive reduction, and Country settings for false positive reduction options to Allow any matches.

Sanctions and adverse media screening for companies

How it works

This is the default behavior for a variant of the Sanctions and adverse media screening check with Dow Jones Risk and Compliance as the data provider.

The check is performed by screening a company’s name and country of incorporation through Dow Jones Risk and Compliance's sources to provide a list of the company’s potential sanctions matches and, if you have access to Dow Jones Risk and Compliance's PEPs results, PEPs matches.

Individuals who are company associates, such as shareholders and officers, are not screened as part of this check. To screen individuals automatically, create an associate smart policy for the task with a screening check for individuals. Learn how company associates are approved/rejected using associate smart policies.

If no potential matches are found for the company (and the company doesn't have potential matches returned from earlier screening checks), the check is marked Completed.

A maximum of 200 potential matches can be processed. If there are more than 200 potential matches, they will not be displayed in Passfort. Please refine your search or view the matches through your data provider's portal.
